Civilisational Continuity and Open-Ended Evolution
Survival with evolution, not expansion for its own sake.
A provisional philosophical, scientific and mathematical research framework. Its ambition is the continued survival and evolution of humanity and other life, preserving meaningful human-descended agency while making room for other conscious entities to take part in decisions that affect their futures.
This is a starting point for inquiry, not a declaration of discovered physical laws or a final constitution for future civilisation. Every postulate stays open to evidence, criticism and revision. Expansion, technology, additional dimensions, wealth, knowledge and even alterations to the physical environment are means, not ends; survival is never a justification for atrocity, domination, forced uniformity or compulsory stagnation.
Start here
Eight documents, in the order they are meant to be read. The mathematical and cosmological material supplies a research language; it is not proof of the vision.
Guiding commitments
The constraints every proposal is read against.
- Survival with evolution is the principal ambition, not expansion for its own sake.
- Meaning is not assigned from above; people and other conscious entities may discover or invent their own.
- Life should have room for love, joy, friendship, honesty, creativity, disagreement and self-direction.
- No abstract numerical ideal of balance or optimisation justifies treating living beings as expendable.
- Humanity should retain a controlling or at least primarily influential role in its continuity, while the rights and interests of other conscious entities receive serious consideration.
- Architects should be compassionate, emotionally mature, scientifically and intellectually capable, historically informed and creatively appreciative.
- Preserve authentic records of the past, including failures and atrocities; distinguish preservation from unrestricted publication.
- Long-term decisions require informed participation, review, challenge and correction.
- Scientific hypotheses must remain distinguishable from philosophical commitments and mathematical constructions.
Where the claims stand
The framework labels its own material. Nothing here is stated in a register it has not earned.
Results that stand on their own; none of them is a physical theory of civilisation.
Within its tested domain. Applying thermodynamics to the whole expanding universe needs care with horizons, gravitational entropy and boundary conditions.
Open questions, treated as open. Observational hints that dark energy evolves are not proof of an alternative cosmic fate.
Research language, labelled as such. If balanced ternary proves unhelpful, the survival objective takes precedence over preserving the formalism.
No mathematical elegance, by itself, establishes physical reality.
What is not being proposed
Stated plainly, because a framework about survival is easy to misread.
- A prescribed purpose for all life.
- Compulsory immortality for every individual.
- A mandate to expand without limit.
- An obligation to maintain present human biology unchanged.
- A predetermined perfect society.
- A claim that current physics already permits escape from heat death.
- An architect with unquestionable authority.
Research programme
Five workstreams, each with a stated output. Milestones and red-team questions are in RESEARCH.md.
1Define the objective
What qualifies as continued humanity; how human-descended influence is kept without subordinating other conscious life; what evolution means when direction and goals may change.
Output: operational definitions, alternative formulations and documented disagreements.
2Ethical and institutional safeguards
Participatory processes for living, future and non-human stakeholders; unacceptable means named; selection, oversight, correction and removal procedures for architects.
Output: a revisable governance charter with explicit dissent and appeal mechanisms.
3Civilisational memory
Provenance, authenticity, replication and disaster recovery; preservation, access and interpretation kept separate; archive durability tested against institutional collapse.
Output: archival requirements, threat models and demonstrable restoration tests.
4Mathematical model
Stage-dependent state spaces and transition operators; whether ternary states encode decisions, physical states or abstract degrees of freedom; formalisms abandoned when they add no explanatory power.
Output: explicit definitions, proofs where possible, simulations and counterexamples.
5Cosmological survival
Long-term cosmological models and their observational constraints; dark-energy scenarios and entropy in expanding spacetimes; resource and computation limits for arbitrarily long-lived systems; speculative transitions evaluated for causality, energy and continuity. Survival extension is kept distinct from demonstrated indefinite survival.
Output: evidence-ranked hypotheses and falsifiable predictions wherever possible.
Red-team questions
The objections the framework asks of itself first.
- Does this framework secretly optimise expansion rather than life?
- Could an architect use survival to justify atrocities?
- Could archival controls become censorship?
- Are non-human interests merely symbolic?
- Are dimensions being confused with physical spacetime?
- Does the model produce predictions or only metaphors?
- Can a future generation reject inherited values without losing access to inherited evidence?

The project invites scientific objections, alternative ethical frameworks, counterexamples and improvements. Every proposal is examined for coercion, concentration of power, exclusion, irreversible harm and misuse. Label each claim with one of the six categories below, cite primary research for physical claims and preserve a record of substantive revisions and objections.
